What Consignment Stores Really Pay: Payout Splits, Contract Terms and Markdown Schedules (2026)

Only 23.9% of consignment stores publish what they will pay you, 1,027 of 4,299. Contract length is published by 15.4%, markdown policy by 14%.

Looking up a specific store?

This report covers the 412 stores with the most complete published terms; the full directory has 4,299 stores, each with its own page.

For example, Clotheshorse in Denver, CO, lists a 50% split and a 90-day contract in this report. See the full listing →

Compare the terms stores disclose, not a promised payout. A split is only part of the agreement. Markdown rules, fees, contract dates and what happens to unsold items can change what you receive.

Explore a payout scenario

A scenario, not a prediction. These amounts assume the item sells at the entered price. They do not estimate whether or when it will sell. Payouts are before fees, tax adjustments, and other deductions.

Markdown stage 1
Markdown stage 2

Formula: sale price after markdown × your consignor share.

Payout scenarios before fees
StageSale priceYour payout
Initial price$100.00$50.00
Day 30$85.00$42.50
Day 60$70.00$35.00

How to read a consignment split

Ask which share belongs to you. A bare 60/40 ratio does not say who receives 60%. Equal splits are easier to read, but the amount being divided still matters.

Check whether the percentage applies to the final sale price or net proceeds after deductions. Ask about item categories, price tiers, cash versus store credit, and account or processing fees. An “up to” rate is not a guaranteed rate.

Keep outright buying separate. A store buying your item directly is making a purchase offer, not promising a consignment payout after a future sale.

A markdown worked example

Hypothetical example, not an observed store policy: an item starts at $100 and the consignor receives 50% of its sale price. A 15% discount from the original price on day 30 makes it $85, yielding $42.50. A 30% discount from the original price on day 60 makes it $70, yielding $35. At the initial price, the payout would be $50. All figures are before fees.

If those discounts instead apply successively to the previous price, $100 × 0.85 × 0.70 is $59.50, yielding $29.75 at a 50% share. Ask which calculation your contract uses.

  • What account, processing, collection, or payment fees apply?
  • Who sets the starting price and approves markdowns?

  • Can unsold items be donated or become the store's property?
  • When can I request payment, by which method, and at what minimum balance?

Frequently asked questions

Does a 60/40 split mean I receive 60%?

Not necessarily. Ask which share belongs to the consignor. A ratio without a named recipient is not enough to calculate your payout.

Is the calculator an earnings prediction?

No. It shows payout scenarios if an item sells at the entered price and markdown stage. It does not estimate whether or when your item will sell. Results are before fees and other deductions.

Do consignment and outright buying pay the same way?

No. Consignment pays a share after a sale under the store's contract. An outright buyer purchases your item directly. Do not compare a buyout offer as though it were a consignment split.

What happens when an item does not sell?

The store's contract controls. Policies can include collection by a deadline, donation, further markdowns, or transfer of ownership. Ask for the applicable policy in writing.

Have these terms been confirmed with every store?

No. Most entries are AI-extracted from store websites, not confirmed with the store. Each row shows its stored verification status, source link, and extraction date. Confirm current terms before consigning.

Methodology and dates

This dated snapshot covers 4,299 published directory stores. It is not a representative survey of every US consignment store. Each location is one record; chain locations can share policy text. Missing information does not mean a store has no policy.

Blank, UNDISCLOSED and reviewer-rejected fields are excluded from coverage. Split coverage and comparison rows require a consignment transaction scope; buyout and unclear splits are excluded. Every field shown in the coverage chart has at least 30 contributing stores. The denominator for every bar is the full published directory.

Contract lengths stored as 1–14 days are excluded from numeric coverage pending unit and source review. There are 60 such directory records and 28 in the comparison cohort. Those comparison rows remain visible with a “Needs review” label. Their CSV values are retained only as raw audit evidence, with an explicit review flag; they are not calculator inputs or statistics.

Contract lengths are recorded as a number of days from the store's published terms; the original wording isn't shown. Confirm with the store before consigning.

Split and markdown text is the stored extraction, which may be incomplete or outdated. A source link is not evidence that the page was rechecked on the audit date.

Data audit: October 20, 2026. Source extraction dates: September 11, 2026 to September 12, 2026. Snapshot rows: 412; 401 AI drafts and 11 marked operator-verified. Verification labels describe existing records, not a new verification of every term.

No averages, payout distributions, or automatic split normalization appear in this phase. The calculator uses only your inputs. The comparison CSV contains raw terms, source URLs, extraction dates and recorded verification status, not contact email fields. CSV cells that could execute spreadsheet formulas are escaped.
